Joëlle traveled to Hong Kong to conduct research for her TV series “Of Tea and Smoke,” an Opium Wars era romantic crime thriller, and part of her comparative literature honors thesis “Of Tea and Smoke: (de) Orientalizing China." The TV series is an opium war era crime thriller developed to resist the model minority and perpetual foreigner stereotypes pervasive today, in response to an analysis of British, French, and American representations of China/Chineseness from Voltaire’s writing to John M. Chu’s 'Crazy Rich Asians.'
