I want to explore the lived experiences of caregivers of adolescents who have contracted tuberculosis in Peru. Frequently, the caregiving responsibility falls on the mother of the adolescent who contracted tuberculosis. I hope to learn through this project more about the gendered burden of care in Latin America, and the effect this has on the caretaker’s own physical and mental health. This is especially relevant in the case of tuberculosis, the treatment of which is time intensive and requires daily doctor’s visits for the child. I believe it is very important to give a voice to the marginalized in global health discourse, and through this project I hope to give a voice to caretakers of adolescents which are frequently ignored in global health discourse.
