No Home for the Brave: The Battle Against America’s Veteran Deportation System

Andrew Steinberg ‘22 is a concentrator in International and Public Affairs. Andrew has a strong interest in immigration, veterans affairs, constitutional law, and conflict resolution. He serves as Campus Coordinator for the Student Clinic for Immigrant Justice’s partnership with Brown’s Center for Human Rights & Humanitarian Studies, which trains undergraduates to provide legal representation to asylum-seekers. On campus, Andrew also serves on the Executive Committee of the Brown Screenwriters' Collective, the Narrow Bridge Project, and the Watson Institute’s Student Advisory Committee.

Andrew’s Royce project, "No Home for the Brave," explores the complex issues surrounding immigration law, citizenship, and the deportation of US military veterans. His collaboration with the leadership of the Deported Veterans Support House in Tijuana, Mexico will tell the stories of foreign-born veterans who, after being brought to America as children, served honorably in the United States Armed Forces. The project will chronicle the veterans’ histories before, during, and after their service and the circumstances which led to their deportations. The final product will include the veterans’ biographies, framed by their complex legal situation and today’s immigration policies. These case studies will support deported veterans’ attempts at repatriation through legislation and executive pardons.
