Squatters and State Power: Documenting the Remnants of the Amsterdam Squatter Movement

Faculty Sponsor: Theresa Ganz

‘Squatting’ has been used by Amsterdam residents as a method to secure housing since the 1960s, but the tactic was declared illegal by the Dutch government in October 2010. Using a combination of documentary photography and recorded interviews, Benjamin explored the remnants of the Amsterdam squatter movement in order to understand the economic, political and cultural incentives behind squatting. Benjamin compiled his photographs and interviews into a self-published book that will engage others to consider more critically the global issue of adequate housing.

Benjamin is currently the Research Assistant at Abt Associates, a global social policy and research consulting firm. He applies qualitative and quantitative research methods to generate solutions for our clients including US federal agencies. He was previously a workshop and program coordinator for Yales Summer Program (Explo).
