Bohao will examine how a group of Japanese intellectuals in Manchukuo conceptualized the modernization project that Imperial Japan promised to launch in Manchuria throughout the 1930’s. He will examine this cohort’s contributions to the influential journal Manchurian Commentary focusing on the journals editors, Tachibana Shiraki and his successor, Satō Daishirō. Bohao hopes to better understand the dynamics between these left-wing intellectuals and Japanese military authorities throughout the 1930’s and early 1940’s.
