Sigida Jeya: Garbage for Grassroots Governance

Faculty Sponsor: David Egilman

The Malian government does not provide waste management services in Sikoroni, a peri-urban slum of 60,000 outside Bamako, Mali, and trash pileup contributes to a number of social, health and environmental hazards. Project Sigida Jeya (Community Cleanliness) reorganized and jumpstarted a new collection system of waste management, tripling the number of households served. Cari worked on this project and authored a bilingual manual to facilitate its continuation.

After graduating from Brown, Caroline became the Associate Director of Common Cause RI, a nonpartisan political lobbying organization supporting open government and civic engagement.
