William Prager and the Rise of Applied Mathematics in America

Faculty Sponsor: Joan Richards

Through archival work, Clare researched Brown University’s establishment of its Applied Mathematics Department under the influence of German émigré William Prager post World War II. The study included a comparative analysis in the roles of Brown’s rival institution programs at Caltech and NYU’s Courant Institute in developing applied mathematics as an academic discipline. This project, in its isolated case studies, sought to analyze how mathematics and science have converged to create a stronger foundation for applied math, as well as examine the influence of applied math in restructuring the American Academy. Clare is now an editorial assistant at Wiley-Blackwell in their Academic Journals Division.

After working as an Assistant Editor in Wiley-Blackwell's Social Science and Humanities' Journal Division, Clare is now pursuing a Ph.D. in MIT's program of History, Anthropology, and Science, Technology and Society.
