The 197-a plan and Gentrification in Bushwick, New York
Faculty Sponsor: Stefano Bloch
The neighborhood of Bushwick, Brooklyn, is reported as one of the premiere sites of urban renewal in the nation’s largest metropolis. Historically a working-class Latino and Black community, the White resident population has risen 364% over the past decade, leading to a trend of dislocation that is not well reported. Danny worked with leaders of Community Board 4 in exploring ideological views of gentrification both past and present among local officials. He also proposed a successful tactic employed by other Brooklyn neighborhoods, the 197-a Plan, which incorporates an economic restructuring to deter external investment.
