Impacts and Limitations of the John Hope Educational Garden on Community Food Experiences

Faculty Sponsor: Dawn King

Daniel’s project was two-fold: he taught gardening classes to preschool and summer students at John Hope Settlement House in the West Side of Providence, and researched how race, gender, and class affect the dynamics within food-related programming. Daniel investigated how the cultural and structural food environment at John Hope affects community members’ experiences in relation to healthy food. Based on a model of participatory action research that includes traveling to similar university-garden partnerships, Daniel also worked towards establishing a farm stand within the John Hope Community. Daniel hoped to assess the role the garden plays in the community’s access to, demand for, and definition of healthful food.

Daniel was previously the Educator and Farmer at Queens County Farm Museum, Compost Coordinator at GrowNYC, and Farm Apprentice at Queens Botanical Garden.
