Investigating the Intersections of Gender, Skateboarding, and Media:

Faculty Sponsor: Susan Smulyan

Women and girls account for at most 25% and at least 9% of American skateboarders. Yet the skateboard industry markets almost exclusively to young men, drawing its main revenue from affluent, white, suburban youth. In skateboarding media including televised competitions, web video, print magazines and blogs, women are almost entirely absent. Dylan traveled to cities and towns across the US to interview and film girls and women who skate. He produced a documentary film highlighting those narratives that are absent in the media landscape of the sport. Dylan hopes his efforts will challenge the exclusionary, gendered norms of the American skateboard culture and industry.
