Liz's project involved continuing her research of the Minoan eruption of the Santorini volcano in Greece. Her goal is to establish the conditions in the magna chamber directly prior to eruption, as this information is vital for understanding what triggers explosive eruptions. The final phase of her project includes submitting an abstract to the American Geophysical Union for publication.

Elizabeth is a curator and research geologist at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution. She directs the Smithsonian’s Global Volcanism Program. Her research in geology focuses on the long-term evolution of the planet’s deep interior from Earth’s formation 4.56 billion years ago to today, with an emphasis on Earth’s oxygen cycle. Cottrell has a Sc.B. from Brown University and a Ph.D. from Columbia University. Liz was a visiting Scientist at the Carnegie Institute in Washington, D.C. and a Fulbright Scholar.
