Impact of X-Ray Technology in Sokode, Togo

Faculty Sponsor: Melissa Clark

In many developing countries, children are diagnosed based on symptoms and clinical judgment. Often when a child presents with overlapping symptoms of pneumonia and malaria, he/she is treated with both antibiotics and antimalarials. This is a waste of limited resources and puts children at unnecessary exposure to incorrect medication. A simple way to differentiate illness is with an x-ray. Gisela traveled to the Clinics of Hope in Sokode, Togo to assist in the installation of an x-ray machine. In addition, she developed and implement a data collection program to assess the usage and effectiveness of the x-ray machine.

Gisela is currently the Patient Service Assistant at Church Health.
