Toward a Better Understanding of Obesity-Influenced Menstrual Cycle Irregularity: A Model Population

Faculty Sponsor: Stephen McGarvey and Geralyn Messerlian

Hasina examined how metabolic disorders, including obesity, negatively influence Samoan women’s reproductive health through an interdisciplinary project bringing together global health and endocrinology. Hasina studied patterns of menstrual cycle irregularity in the population, known for high rates of female obesity. By assessing how menstrual patterns can be linked to the hormonal markers of obesity, diabetes and insulin resistance, Hasina hopes to contribute to interventions for improving the reproductive health of obese women.
