Heather studied and characterized a member of a newly identified protein family forming the solute barrier between epithelial cells. Comparing the localization and function of this normal and mutated protein, she tested whether specific amino acids affect the junction formed between adjacent cells.

Dr. Heather McCrea is the chief neurosurgery resident at the Weill Cornell Brain and Spine Center. he obtained her Sc.B. in biochemistry with Honors from Brown University in 2002, then attended Yale University School of Medicine's Medical Scientist Training Program and obtained her M.D./Ph.D. in 2009. Her Ph.D. work in Cell Biology was completed in the laboratory of Dr. Pietro De Camilli, where she studied Lowe Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder. For this work, she was awarded the Harry Burr Ferris Prize for the best doctoral dissertation in Cell Biology at Yale University, and she was awarded the M.D./Ph.D. Award for the graduate who has shown excellence in both research and clinical activities.
