Leisure in Time of Crisis: Hunting, Fishing, and Horsemanship in Late Habsburg-Era Spain

Faculty Sponsor: Stephen Houston

Matthew investigated notions of kingship and patterns of court behavior to investigate why monarchs of late Habsburg-Era Spain spent exorbitant sums on their rural hunting lodges, even as their state declared bankruptcy on four separate occasions between 1550 and 1650.

After graduating from Brown, Matthew earned an M.F.A. in fiction-writing at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in 2010. He worked in Seattle as a paralegal before taking a position in student legal services at Portland State University in Oregon.
