Nick will investigate the history and current practices of sweatshops in New York City. He will use his research to produce an educational 32-page comic book designed to bolster the efforts of human rights groups and draw attention to sweatshop practices.

Nick Rutter is a historian of Cold War communism. He received a Ph.D. from Yale University in 2013. His dissertation explored the World Festivals of Youth and Students, the biggest twentieth-century world events that Americans have never heard of. The Festival met thirteen times between 1947 and 1989, eleven of them in communist cities, each time host to 20,000 to 30,000 delegates aged 16 to 30 from 100 countries. Nick spent the 2013-2014 school year as a Visiting Assistant Professor of History at Colgate University. And has recently accepted a postdoctoral fellowship at the Central European University in Budapest.
