Nickhill and Chitra Akileswaran conducted studies of an AIDS population in Chennai, India to document the effects of alternative therapy usage on the Western biomedical doctor-patient relationship. In this two-part project, Chitra administered surveys to patients and Nickhill developed case studies from interviews of patients an doctors, creating a project that was both quantitative and qualitative.

Nickhill is a clinical fellow in the Department of Epidemiology at St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Los Angeles. He is applying Markov Chain Monte Carlo and Markov cohort methods to simulate the natural morbidity and early mortality experienced by childhood cancer survivors. He is interested in developing pediatric cancer prioritization metrics and management algorithms to treat cancers and blood diseases for children who live in low and middle-income settings. After Brown he conducted operational Tuberculosis research in Eldoret, Kenya, received an M.P.H. from Harvard University, attended medical school at the University of Cincinnati, and completed his residency at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles.
