Nina Safane began her Royce Fellowship with the intention of researching gender inequities and holistic models of education, but proceeded to write a charter proposal that was later approved by Denver Public Schools.

Nina opened the Girls Athletic Leadership School (GALS) in the fall of 2010. GALS is the first, gender specific public school in Colorado, and focuses on an integrated model of health and wellness in an effort to optimize girls' self-development and academic success. The school serves approximately 170 girls in grades 6-8 from a diverse population across Denver and is ranked among the best of the Denver Public Schools. She currently serves as Head of School.
