Creative Reciprocity in the Work of Clement Greenberg and David Smith

Faculty Sponsor: Hervé Vanel

Sophie Lynford’s senior honors thesis investigated the relationship between the prominent American art critic, Clement Greenberg, and the abstract expressionist sculptor, David Smith, focusing primarily on their interactions between 1943 and the sculptor’s death in 1965. A Royce Fellowship allowed Sophie to spend three months steeped in the Greenberg Papers and Smith Papers at the Getty Institute and Archives of American Art undertaking research in support of her thesis.

After graduating from Brown, Sophie worked in the curatorial department at the New-York Historical Society Museum and is now pursuing her doctorate in the History of Art at Yale University.
