Xochi Cartland is part of the class of 20’-21’ concentrating in Literary Arts. Her background is in Disability Justice, with her primary interest residing in building grassroots infrastructures for responding to harm and violence that operate outside of institutions. For her Royce Project, she will be co-creating a Transformative Justice Practitioner Program in Boston for youth aged 18-25. This work will be done in collaboration with the professional staff of Unity Circles; Dara Bayer and Valleria Miranda-Ferrick. The main goal of this project is to increase the capacity of the Boston community to respond to harm in a way that does not involve the carceral state, including but not limited to police, prisons, child protective services, hospitals, or any other aspect of the penal system. Furthermore, she hopes to use this experience to create a transformative model that will hold institutions accountable for the harm done to the communities with which they interact.
