Taking Cultural Community Beyond Campus
July 21, 2015

Saron Mechale '17 and Bereket Zekarias '15 created what they couldn't find at Brown - a community for Ethiopian and Eritrean students to gather and celebrate their culture. But unlike many other student groups, their community with the Habeshawi Initiative extends beyond campus. They've established, among various service projects, a three-way cultural exchange class that teaches Ethiopian history, dance, and the Amharic language to adopted Ethiopian children in Providence. Their other endeavors include supporting underprivileged high school students in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
If you'd like to get involved with the Habeshawi Initiative, please get in touch at [email protected].
