This June, the Swearer Center relocated from 25 George Street to a larger building at 2 Stimson Avenue. The new premises doubles our available office space, allowing for more space for students and our growing staff and programs. It also paves the way for the construction of an accessible entrance, which is planned for later this fall.

After almost 30 years at 25 George Street, it was hard to leave behind a building that had long felt like home for the Swearer Center, but the relocation offers new opportunities for growth and collaboration.

“I am so excited for students to have more room to engage with us in our beautiful space at 2 Stimson,” said Betsy Shimberg, Director of Student Development at the Swearer Center. “The move is a bit bittersweet after so many years of collaborating with community out of our small house on 25 George, but I’m looking forward to continuing to create more just and equitable communities from our new home. Come on over and check it out!”

Our new location at 2 Stimson Avenue features several dedicated spaces for students, including two collaboration spaces, an office for the Student Advisory Committee, and several bookable rooms for study and meetings. Diana Cruz ‘21, a member of the Student Advisory Committee, spoke to the Brown Daily Herald earlier this year about the move.

“I had noticed from just being at the (current location) the need for more space,” Cruz said. “Seeing how joyous the staff was about the move rubbed off on me and made me feel like this is the right step in the Swearer Center’s history. There’s a lot of excitement around the move.” – via the Brown Daily Herald.

2 Stimson Avenue, which was most recently occupied by the Carney Institute for Brain Science, was constructed in 1861 and neighbors the Nelson Fitness Center. A new exhibit planned for the fall will investigate the area’s history.

Our staff – including several student staffers – have spent the summer getting settled in the building before new and returning students arrive on campus in September. A series of events are planned to welcome students to the new space during orientation, along with a community open house for students, staff, faculty, and community partners during Family Weekend in October. We invite you to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube to keep up-to-date with news and events, and stop by 2 Stimson Avenue soon to get to know our new home!
