Renowned meditation leader and scholar, Shinzen Young visits the Brown Contemplative Studies Initiative as its first Contemplative Mentor in Residence. Shinzen has completed extensive training in Asia in each of three major Buddhist traditions, Vajrayana, Zen, and Vipassana. He is known for innovative "interactive, alogrithmic approach to mindfulness, a system designed for use in pain management, recovery support, and as an adjucnt to psychotherapy. He leads meditation retreats throughout North America and has helped establish numerous mindfulness centers and programs.
During his stay at Brown, Shinzen has given a lecture "The Science of Enlightenment," held several weekend long intensive mindful workshops, and will be holding several meditation workshops for staff. In addition he has provided personal mindfulness coaching for undergraduates, graduates, staff and faculty at Brown, and guest lectured in several classes, and advised faculty on the implementation of mindfulness practices in their courses - contemplative pedagogy.
