Methods

SPS’s Online experts know that effective learning depends on high-quality instructional design – no matter whether in a traditional face-to-face classroom or in an online environment.

Faculty partner with an SPS instructional designer to develop courses that carry excellent content and exemplify best practices of student-centered design and inquiry-based learning. Innovative pedagogical approaches foster exciting, dynamic learning communities that encourage one-on-one interaction, teamwork, and networking.

Course development includes planning, design, building, testing, and evaluation phases. Time from kickoff to launch depends in large part upon instructor schedules/availability, but a semester-equivalent course generally takes about 3-6 months to fully develop.

Outcomes

Successes:

Building on the success of SPS’s 2010 partnership with the IE Business School in Madrid, Spain to produce the blended IE Brown EMBA, Brown’s School of Professional Studies successfully launched its own blended executive program in Healthcare Leadership in 2013. More blended executive programs are forthcoming.

Almost immediately I found myself incorporating course content into my daily activities as an academic physician and clinical executive. - EMHL Class of 2015 student

The balance between on-campus and online learning has allowed me to stretch my capabilities and talents to new levels, and the variety of perspectives, knowledge, and expertise among faculty, guest speakers, and my fellow classmates has been invigorating and inspirational. -EMHL Class of 2015 student

Challenges:

The School of Professional Studies continues to examine the need to balance an intensive and rigorous educational program, while at the same time respecting the life and work realities of busy working professionals. To meet this challenge, program designers continuously search for the most effective and engaging methods of reaching and teaching students, whether they are in residence or online.

Conclusions:

The highly accomplished professionals who choose programs in the School of Professional Studies have achieved significant career success and aspire to do more. At Brown, they learn in a vibrant, multidisciplinary community of peers, broaden their vision, create and test innovative and practical solutions, and build lifelong professional networks. They benefit from blended residential and online learning that allows them to maintain demanding professional schedules while pursuing advanced studies at Brown.

These students become highly engaged alumni who both represent Brown well as they affect immediate and important changes in their professions and regularly seek to contribute to Brown by providing opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, being active participants in Brown events, and giving to the University.
