Biography

A historian of modern European history, I write on the histories of economic life, migration, work, and political economy. I focus on the nineteenth century, a pivotal period in European history that allows for occasional (research) incursions into both the early modern and modern periods. Currently I am at work on my first book titled "The Migrant's Spirit: Industrial Revolution in the German Lands." The study situates Germany's rise as a global industrial powerhouse in the context of nearly a century of large-scale German migration to the Americas. Born and raised in Germany, I hold a B.A. in history and economics summa cum laude as well as a PhD in history from Stanford University.
