Chinese Language Program, Internship and Research Project Support

The EAS Department seeks to encourage concentrators and non-concentrators to pursue intensive language training, research, and other opportunities for learning related to China, and offers the following support for those activities:

For concentrators in East Asian Studies

  • East Asian Studies concentrators writing an honors thesis using Chinese language sources may apply for fellowship support of up to $2,500 to support their research.  These funds may be used for travel to archives or other sites associated with the research project.  Students will normally apply for support in the second semester of their junior year, and begin work on the project in the summer between junior and senior year.

For both concentrators in East Asian Studies and non-concentrators

  • Undergraduates planning to attend summer language programs in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong, may apply to the EAS Department for fellowship support of up to $5,000.  Funds can be applied to tuition, travel, or living costs for those programs.
  • Undergraduates may apply to the EAS Department for fellowship support up to $2,500 if pursuing eight to ten weeks unpaid or minimally paid summer internships in China, Taiwan or Hong Kong.  Students wishing to take unpaid or minimally paid positions with NGOs, companies, or government agencies, may apply these awards toward travel, lodging, or living costs.
  • Undergraduates may apply for support from The Arun Stewart '11 Memorial Fund,  established by Sunita and Tony in memory of their son, the late Arun David Stewart Class of 2011, to honor his passion for Chinese language and culture. With respect to distributions from the Fund that are made for the purpose of pursuing intensive language instruction in China, the Donors prefer that recipients be enrolled in the Inter-University Program for Chinese Language Studies.
