Gemmill Term Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering & Applied Mechanics at the University of Pennsylvania will speak on: "Multiscale Modeling and Simulation: Some Challenges and New Perspectives". Abstract: The design and optimization of the next generation of materials and applications strongly hinge on our understanding of the processing-microstructure-performance relations; and these, in turn, result from the collective behavior of materials’ features at multiple length and time scales.

Prof. Xanthippi Markenscoff, Distinguished Professor Solid Mechanics, Dept of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, San Diego will present a talk entitled: "Self-Similarly Expanding Eshelby Inclusions". Abstract: In a seminal paper, Eshelby (1957) showed the constant interior stress property for an ellipsoidal inclusion with transformation strain. The Eshelby Tensor allows for the solution of inhomogeneous inclusions and inhomogeneities.

Extreme Gingerbread House Competition

Build an earthquake-resistant Gingerbread house to be tested on a shake table and judged by engineering professors. This is the 10th annual Gingerbread competition, sponsored by Brown's Society of Women Engineers. Email BrownUSWE@gmail.com to register with the name of team and members. Andre Levchenko, John C. Malone Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Director of Yale Systems Biology Institute lecture is entitled: "From Bacteria to Neurons: How Architecture of Signaling Circuits Defines Cellular Decision Making". Abstract: All living cells have molecular networks dedicated to detection and processing of information contained in extracellular cues. The connectivity of these networks can display complex structural patterns, including feedback and feedforward loops.

Prof. Pablo D. Zavattieri, Lyles School of Civil Engineering, Purdue University, will speak on "Architectured Materials Inspired by Nature: A Few Interesting Problems in Mechanics". Abstract: There is a strong demand for new paradigms of design and development of advanced high-performance structural materials with high specific strength, stiffness and toughness for new technological needs. Yet, most engineering materials have an inverse relation between these desired properties.
