Unpleasing women appear throughout fiction: this course will address novels, films and critical theory from the Victorian to the contemporary which align the nasty, the ugly and the unwelcome with gender. Authors and critics include Eliot, Brontë, James, Ford, Atwood, Tan, Barthes, Butler, hooks and Gilbert & Gubar. Films include Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?, Rosemary’s Baby and Princess Mononoke.
