Drew Daniel, Associate Professor of English at The Johns Hopkins University and author of “The Melancholy Assemblage: Affect and Epistemology in the English Renaissance,” will present a lecture titled “Hebe’s Claim: Sacrificial Camp in Lyly’s ‘Gallathea’ " on Monday, November 16, 2015, in the Department of English, 70 Brown Street, Room 315. This talk pushes off from the unexpected presence of Elizabethan court playwright John Lyly within the pantheon of precursors to the camp sensibility claimed by Susan Sontag in her celebrated, over-familiar, now somewhat anachronistic 1964 essay, "Notes on Camp.”
