Mark McGurl, Professor of English, Stanford University, is author of the acclaimed books “The Program Era: Postwar Fiction and the Rise of Creative Writing” and “The Novel Art: Elevations of American Fiction after Henry James.” His lecture assesses what it means to think of the rise of as a signal event in recent literary history. Through this framework, McGurl considers the interplay between media technology, market forces, and literature.
