Professor Ross Posnock of Columbia will lecture on “‘The Courage to be an Absolute Nobody’: Salinger and the Art of Renunciation in Postwar America” on Wed., March 18, at 5:30 pm in Brown/RISD Hillel, 80 Brown St., 2nd fl. Posnock links the plight of Franny Glass to other late 50s renunciants including the Trappist monk Thomas Merton and Salinger’s old college friend the abstract painter Ad Reinhardt, both of whom ponder the challenges of Christian mysticism and Eastern thinking for art and life.
