The GSOC orientation is a community-building program that creates belonging through collaboration with campus partners and current graduate students to provide an intentional space to discuss graduate student of color life at Brown. The Orientation is developed with understandings of different racialized and gendered identities and a commitment to principles of racial and social justice. In particular, this programming has been designed to raise awareness of issues encountered by students from historically underrepresented groups (HUG) in a predominantly white institution. It is people-of-color centered, queer and trans* affirming, and welcoming to those of all abilities, bodies, and identities.

These discussions are carried forward during the year through events organized by the Brown Center for Students of Color (BCSC), First Generation Low-Income Student Center, LGBTQ+ Resource Center, Sarah Doyle Women’s Center (SDWC), the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America, the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice, the Graduate School, and other campus partners.
