Nicosia Shakes PhD '17 has been awarded the National Women's Studies Association/University of Illinois Press First Book Prize for 2017. The prize is awarded for intersectional feminist scholarship that is interdisciplinary and offers new perspectives on issues central to women’s and gender studies. Recipients receive a book contract with the University of Illinois Press. Shakes' manuscript is a revision of her prize-winning dissertation entitled Gender, Race and Performance Space: Women’s Activism in Jamaican and South African Theatre. She will be honored on November 17 at the National Women's Studies Association conference in Baltimore, Maryland.
