International Community Initiatives

Global Voices
Organized in collaboration with the International Student Experience Center, Global Voices was a live talk event, which provided international graduate students the space and the stage to share their stories, their journey to the United States and to Brown, their perspectives and experiences as international students. These events were small, informal and intimate, with 4-5 graduate students speaking to small audiences of the faculty, staff and other graduate and undergraduate students. Offered each semester during 2017- 18 academic year, graduate student speakers shared such stories as personal initiatives to provide textbooks to their home country, their experiences teaching in U.S. classroom, experiences in a bicultural family, finding the courage to “speak up” in academic spaces, and the desire to share one’s culture with others at Brown. Community Fellows managed various aspects of the event including speaker recruitment, rehearsal, creation of program, and speaker introductions at the event.

Cultural Café Series
Cultural Café events were a series of one and half hour gatherings that welcome international graduate students to connect over international snacks and cuisine, games, and conversation. Events were held in the Global Brown Lounge (J. Walter Wilson 310), where games and a kitchenette are available for use. In 2017-18, four Cultural Cafe events featured different cuisine from local and regional ethnic cuisine vendors. These events were hosted in collaboration with the International Student Experience Center.

Wellness & Health Community Initiatives

Grad De-Stress Yoga Sessions
These free yoga session offered graduate students the space and time to practice calm and mindfulness during active yoga practice and in daily life. Sessions were followed by snacks and refreshments and time to mingle with fellow graduate students. During the 2017-18 academic year, two free yoga sessions were held at the end of each semester and led by a certified instructor.

Meditation & Breath Workshop
This free workshop, led by a certified instructor, welcomed graduate students to learn and practice meditation techniques.

Graduate Student Cooking Class
Led by Chef Paup of Bon Appetit and organized with Brown Catering and Dining Services and Director of Dining Services at Sharpe Refectory (George Barbosa), this class offered graduate students the chance to learn basic cooking technique and easy to make recipe. This hands-on class was limited to 12 students- each student receives ingredients for the dish of the day, cooking set-up, and group instruction. Graduate Community Fellows manage outreach and coordination of student participants as well as engage peers during the class. The class is held in the Sharpe Refectory Bake Shop.

Group Finals Week Run
This run invited graduate students to stretch their legs and release stress and anxiety built up during finals week. Led by Community fellows, the group run was 3.5 miles in length, starting and ending at the Nelson Fitness Center. Runners were rewarded with post-run water and snacks, compliments of the Community Fellows Program.
