Cynthia Brokaw is a historian of early modern China, with a focus on social history and the history of the book. Her first book, The Ledgers of Merit and Demerit: Social Change and Moral Order in Late Imperial China (Princeton University Press), examined the role of popular religious beliefs in the formation of elite social ideologies of the late Ming and Qing. Commerce in Culture: The Sibao Book Trade in the Qing and Republican Periods (Harvard University Asia Center), which is based on extensive field and archival work in Fujian province, studies a rural book publishing industry active in producing and distributing popular texts throughout south China. She has also co-edited several essay collections on early modern and modern Chinese book history. She has taught at Brown since 2009.
