Antisemitism and Islamophobia

1710 [CRN: 24868]

Hostility towards Jews in Europe has raised fears that a new form of antisemitism is on the rise in a continent long troubled by such racism. Others question both the "newness" of this phenomenon and the level of threat it poses, arguing that it is the continent's Muslim population that faces the greatest adversity. This course will explore debates over this issue by placing them in a wider historical and comparative context. Through examining Christian Europe's relationship to the Jewish and Muslim "other" over time, it will consider how projects of exclusion have overlapped and diverged over the centuries.
