Digital Portfolios and Online Presence in and Beyond the Academy
Friday, October 23, 2020 - 1:00-2:00 PM ET (via Zoom)
Many job postings ask for evidence of teaching excellence, scholarship, and job-related experience in the form of a digital portfolio. It’s also common for companies and institutions to conduct preliminary screenings of candidates’ online presence (e.g., LinkedIn profiles, blogs, websites, etc.). How do you best represent and showcase your experience in a digital format? How do you effectively create and maintain your online presence? In this workshop, we will discuss the primary role and several features of digital professional portfolios (i.e., teaching, research, and experience-related) with particular focus on their function in academic and other language-oriented job applications. We will view and analyze several example portfolios. The workshop will also provide some suggestions for getting started with and/or developing your existing portfolio and maintaining your professional online presence.
Please have on hand any examples of work you would like to showcase on your own portfolio, as well as any questions you have about this genre!
Working with Digital “Texts” in Language/Culture Instruction
Friday, November 13, 2020 - 1:00-2:00 PM ET
The field of second language teaching has suggested the importance of including authentic content and texts early on in the curriculum. More and more job postings are reflecting this by requesting that candidates have experience with innovative ways to teach texts across the curriculum. This workshop will focus on training graduate students in the use of Hypothes.is, a digital social reading and annotation tool, for incorporating texts and other web-based content throughout the language/culture curriculum. We will discuss the benefits and challenges of incorporating texts in the target language across the curriculum as well as strategies for designing digital social reading activities. Attendees will have the chance to get to know the various features of Hypothes.is through several hands-on example texts and learning activities.
If possible, please arrange for instructor access to a Brown Canvas course site and set up your free account with Hypothes.is prior to the workshop. If you do not have access to a course site, please contact Chelsea Timlin by November 9.
Fall 2020 Technology Workshop Series
Join the Center for Language Studies for an interactive workshop series devoted to second language teaching and learning in online spaces. Each workshop will feature a chance to check-in with other faculty members on what is going particularly well in your courses, any problems that are arising, and ideas and suggestions for the remainder of the semester and future semesters. The December workshop will feature a showcase, during which any faculty members and graduate student teaching assistants are welcome to share examples in more detail from their courses.
Please RSVP to each workshop by clicking the links below and be sure to mark your calendars! Workshops are organized and led by Chelsea Timlin, Assistant Director of Technology / Lecturer in Language Studies. Please feel free to contact Chelsea with any questions at [email protected].
