Katie Brown is a PhD student with the Brown Center for Biomedical Informatics and Center for Computational Molecular Biology. She is a Registered Nurse (RN) and holds a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) in Child Health/Public Health from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biochemistry from Abilene Christian University. Katie’s past experience includes appointment as a Nursing Chair for Clinical Quality and Safety and Nursing Supervisor at a large multispecialty, primary care, after-hours clinic in Austin, Texas. Her other previous positions include Clinical Informatics Specialist for a hospital system and RN experience within the hospital and surgery center settings. Katie’s research interests include the implementation and design of biomedical informatics applications and techniques to improve patient care. Her work aims to develop methods to transform data into knowledge, design interventions to enhance patient care, progress towards interoperability between health systems and patients, and formally evaluate methods and technological interventions. Her current focus is on applying machine learning techniques to study Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ASD comorbidities, and other mental health disorders including the study of pediatric behavioral health emergency room readmission risk to better understand the demographic factors and health disparities in the state of Rhode Island.
