US emergency care costs higher than previously thought

July 3, 2013

U.S. emergency care costs may be more than twice previously published estimates, according to a new analysis by Dr. Michael Lee and department chair Dr. Brian Zink.  Dr. Jay Schuur, an alumnus of the Brown residency program was also a co-author.  The article, published on April 26 in the Annals of Emergency Medicine, critiques existing cost estimates, argues for improved accounting, and suggests considering the value of emergency care as well as total spending.
