Rhode Island Hospital Emergency Department

Rhode Island Hospital is the major teaching hospital of the Alpert Medical School of Brown University, and is a national leader in research. The Rhode Island Hospital Andrew F. Anderson Emergency Department is the only Level 1 trauma center in southeastern New England. The Anderson ED treats 105,000 adult patients annually, making it one of the busiest emergency departments in the Northeast. The Anderson ED is staffed by board-certified emergency medicine attendings, all of whom are faculty members in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Hasbro Children’s Hospital Emergency Department

Hasbro Children’s Hospital is the pediatric division of Rhode Island Hospital and the major pediatric teaching hospital for the Alpert Medical School of Brown University. The Hasbro Children’s Hospital Emergency Department is the only American College of Surgeons’ Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center for Rhode Island, Southeastern Massachusetts, and Eastern Connecticut. A dozen regional hospitals routinely refer patients to the Hasbro Emergency Department. The annual Hasbro ED volume exceeds 50,000 patients, making it the second busiest pediatric emergency department in New England. The Hasbro ED is staffed by board-certified pediatric emergency medicine attendings, all of whom are full faculty members in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

The Miriam Hospital Emergency Department

The Miriam Hospital is an outstanding academic community hospital located on Providence’s East Side. The Miriam Hospital Emergency Department cares for approximately 60,000 patients per year. Emergency department acuity is consistently high, with an admission rate of approximately 30 percent. The patient population spans all ages, with a significant geriatric component, and socioeconomically reflects the hospital's location in a middle-class neighborhood in close proximity to Brown University. The Miriam ED is staffed by board-certified emergency medicine attendings, all of whom are faculty members in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

Newport Hospital Emergency Department

Newport Hospital is a renowned community hospital and the only acute care hospital in Newport County. The Newport Hospital Emergency Department handles about 31,000 patient visits each year, both for minor problems and to treat acutely ill or injured patients. The Newport ED is staffed by board-certified emergency medicine attendings, all of whom are faculty members in the Department of Emergency Medicine.

 Injury Prevention Center

As injury is the leading cause of death of children and young adults in Rhode Island, the Injury Prevention Center dedicates itself to studying and preventing injuries through novel programs. Through community outreach programming, research, and education, IPC faculty work to reduce the incidence of injuries in the area. Rhode Island has the highest percentage of alcohol-related casualties in the United States, and the IPC has a particular focus of identifying individuals at higher risk of alcoholism and addiction in order to reduce that rate. IPC researchers also study motor vehicle safety, drug abuse, medical student and resident education, bicycle safety, fire safety, and home safety.

Medical Simulation Center

The Rhode Island Medical Simulation Center is a state-of-the-art facility which helps train medical professionals and medical students in specialized techniques through high fidelity medical simulation, in order to minimize medical error in complicated, high-stress situations. Occupying 3,000 square feet in the Coro Building of Rhode Island Hospital, the Simulation Center allows Emergency Medicine faculty members to develop and run training curricula in order to enhance the performance of physicians, staff, and students alike. The Simulation Center applies engineering principles directly to the development of improved patient care models in a unique collaboration of investigators from Rhode Island, Hasbro Children’s, The Miriam, and Newport Hospitals as well as from Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island and Brown Medical School.

Musculoskeletal Trauma Lab

 The Department of Emergency Medicine has an established Musculoskeletal Trauma Laboratory located on the Rhode Island Hospital campus in the Coro Building. This laboratory is directed by Dr. Gregory Jay and is staffed by investigators from the Department of Emergency Medicine and the Brown University Division of Engineering. Research activities are focused on Bio-Engineering and Biophotonics Projects which are translationally important to the care of patients presenting to an Emergency Department.  

Neurotrauma and Brain Barriers Research Lab

The Department of Emergency Medicine has an established Neurotrauma and Brain Barriers Research Laboratory located on the Rhode Island Hospital campus in the Coro Building. This laboratory is directed by Dr. Adam Chodobski. Research activities are focused on dysfunction of the blood-brain barrier resulting from neurotrauma, post-traumatic brain edema, and neuroinflammation.
