Diversity in Medicine Student Scholarship Program
The Department of Orthopaedics is participating as a sponsor in the Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholarship program and will sponsor four students in 2021. Qualified URM students will be selected from a competitive applicant pool to receive this scholarship to help pay for costs associated with doing away rotations at Brown. Medical students who are interested in applying for residency at Brown are encouraged to apply. Those students will be paired up with resident and faculty members of the BMHA for mentorship. We strongly encourage students interested in this scholarship to apply for away rotations early. Questions about the scholarship should be directed to [email protected]
Dr. Patricia Solga, Senior Advisor to the Chair on Diversity
Dr. Solga is a member of WOLF, Women’s’ Orthopaedic Leadership Forum teaching “Women in Orthopedics” to junior and senior students at the Cooley High School of Science at the Juanita Sanchez Complex. This course targets students from South Providence to introduce them to careers in medicine. WOLF now has 29 members and 12 teachers.
Dr. Dio Garcia, Orthopaedic Diversity Committee Member
- Dr. Garcia has recently joined the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs and will utilize the information learned through this program to inform the committee and help our program align with the University and Department’s DIAP.
- Dr. Garcia was honored by the Rhode Island State Senate for his efforts in working with residents of Pawtucket and Central Falls during the Covid-19 crisis. He has been praised by the Central Falls City Council, the RI Black and Latino Caucus and the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce for his outstanding public service during the pandemic.
Dr. Patricia Solga and four of our orthopedic residents will be participating in the Diversity in Medicine Virtual Residency Recruitment Fair being held on August 7, 2021. This event is for fourth year students and provides an overview of the medical school, introduction to our residency programs, information about resident life, and strategies for the application process. There will be a question and answer sessions as well.

Faculty in the Department of Orthopedics are encouraged to complete the E-learning module entitled “Unconscious Bias” available on Brown’s website. The Alpert Medical School website has information regarding making curricula and teaching more inclusive.
