About Surgery

The Department of Surgery at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University responds to the needs of an increasingly diverse student, resident, faculty, physician, and patient population as it meets the challenges of an ever-changing healthcare environment.

The Department strives to adhere to the mission of the Medical School to educate physicians in the scientific, ethical and humanistic dimensions of medicine and to guide them in the art and science of the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of illness. We offer a diversified curriculum of premedical and medical studies that encompasses all facets of the medical sciences, fostering innovative approaches and sound medical education. The Department of Surgery encompasses the faculty and facilities of five affiliated hospitals: its parent institution Rhode Island Hospital with Hasbro Children's Hospital and four affiliated institutions - The Miriam HospitalVeterans Administration Medical CenterNewport Hosptial, and Women & Infants Hospital .

Support of basic and clinical research is imperative to the advancement of the surgical sciences and clinical medicine. It is, therefore, the objective of the Department of Surgery to enhance integration of basic sciences with medical education, healthcare delivery and public health policy.
