Division of General Surgery
The Department of Surgery's General Surgery program offers ample opportunity for residents to be exposed to the broad discipline of general surgery, including alimentary and biliary tract surgery, laparoendoscopic surgery, colon and rectal surgery, endocrine surgery, and breast and oncologic surgery.
Basic and clinical research in the Division of General Surgery has grown tremendously over the past several years. The portfolio of research grants has become even more diversified with the addition of several new faculty members with laboratory research programs. The clinical and basic science research programs investigate causes and treatments for various cancers including colorectal, endocrine, hepatic, and thyroid. In addition, novel treatments and nutrition for trauma patients and pulmonary edema represent other current research initiatives.
