The Critical Care Division of the Department of Anesthesiology is composed of board-certified, fellowship-trained anesthesia intensivists who work clinically in both the Miriam Hospital intensive-care unit (ICU) and the operating rooms. Our expertise includes specialized, evidence-based care for critically-ill patients. While in the Miriam ICU our intensivists work closely with residents from anesthesiology, emergency medicine, family medicine, and internal medicine, as well as critical care nurses in caring for critically-ill patients both medical and surgical. We follow high standards-of-care that are supported by evidence-based medicine; utilize state-of-the-art technology and equipment for diagnosis and management of critical illness; and show empathy for patients and families.

In addition, our anesthesiology residents also rotate through the surgical intensive-care unit (SICU) at the Rhode Island Hospital. While on critical-care rotations, residents can expect to receive formal didactic education; multi-disciplinary teaching rounds; and an intensive ultrasound-based curriculum that prepares them both for board examinations as well as their future careers.

In the operating rooms, we care for the full-spectrum of patients undergoing surgical and medical procedures, and provide consultation to our colleagues in caring for critically-ill patients in the operating room, including patients who have suffered traumatic injury. We also staff the Post Anesthesia Care Unit as part of a multidisciplinary team to care for patients following surgery. In addition to providing expert care to patients, our intensivists are involved in innovative research in critical care, speak nationally and internationally at conferences on subjects related to critical care, and provide education on critical care subjects to multidisciplinary teams, including medical students and resident physicians. Our intensivists are also members of important quality improvement committees, including the CPR committees at both Rhode Island Hospital and the Miriam Hospital.
