Ability II: Basic Clinical Skills

The competent graduate develops the skills to obtain a comprehensive history, conduct a thorough physical examination, perform basic clinical tests and interpret data in a spectrum of patient care settings.

 Criteria for Assessment:

 1. The graduate will be competent in obtaining a comprehensive history in a patient.

      A.  In an adult:

        -Chief complaint
        -History of present illness
        -Past medical history
        -Past surgical history
        -Social History including sexual history
        -Family history
        -Review of systems

     B. In a child (as per adult with appropriate modications listed below):

        -Birth history
        -Growth and development (i.e. milestones)

2.  The graduate will be competent in performing a comprehensive physical examination as appropriate in the geriatric patient; adult patient; the pregnant patient; the adolescent patient and children including toddlers and newborns.  The physical examination components are listed below:  

        -Vital signs
General appearance
        -GU including rectal examination, pelvic examination in women and
          prostate examination in men   
        -Extremities, musculoskeletal and vascular

3.  The graduate will be competent in performing routine clinical procedures and interpreting basic diagnostic tests:  These procedures and diagnostic tests include:

        -Start an IV and venipuncture
        -Perform BLS and ACLS
        -Perform an arterial blood gas and interpret results
        -Insert nasogastric tube
        -Work with sterile technique
        -Practice universal precautions
        -Perform a pap smear
        -Suture lacerations
        -Perform injections:  Intradermal, sub-Q, IM and IV
        -Place a foley catheter in a male and female patient
        -Perform a normal vaginal delivery
        -Incise and drain superficial lesions
        -Understand basic wound care
        -Perform throat swab and interpret results of a rapid strep test
        -Interpret a gram stain
        -Interpretation of an EKG
        -Interpret results of stool occult blood
        -Prepare and interpret a vaginal wet prep
        -Interpret a chest x-ray and KUB
        -Interpret blood chemistries and a CBC
        -Interpret CSF studies
