Rhode Island and the nation are experiencing an epidemic of opioid overdose and deaths as well as spiraling opioid addiction. It is now possible for qualified physicians to prescribe FDA-approved medications to treat opioid use disorder from office-based practices. This will greatly increase the access to treatment for opioid use disorder in affected individuals. This day long (8 hour) course sponsored by the American Academy of Addiction Psychiatry will provide the training required by the Drug Abuse Treatment Act of 2000 for office-based treatment of opioid use disorder. Physicians completing this course will be eligible for the necessary waiver to prescribe buprenorphine/naloxone in the treatment of opioid use disorder. Other healthcare providers attending will learn about this treatment & be a source of critically needed support of this practice.
Physicians, Psychiatrists, Physician Assistants, APRNs, Nurses, Counselors, Pharmacists, and Allied Healthcare Professionals who may provide services to those receiving office-based treatment for opioid use disorder.
At the conclusion of this activity, participants should be able to provide specific information on safe use of opioid medications including overdose prevention, the pharmacology and clinical use of buprenorphine, and resources needed to set up office-based treatment of opioid dependence.
