Program Description

The rate of sports participation among young athletes in the United States is significant. Sports-related injuries and conditions are among the most common reasons children and adolescents present to their primary care provider. Understanding the pathophysiology and anatomy of the musculoskeletal system are crucial to promptly diagnose and appropriately manage patients with these injuries. This course will enhance participants’ familiarity with various pediatric and adolescent sports medicine topics and increase their comfort in initiating evaluation and treatment. The curriculum will incorporate interactive case examples, multiple opportunities for question and answer, and hands-on workshops on physical examination and splinting when dealing with acute sports-related injuries.

Primary Care and Chiropractic Physicians, Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, Physical Therapists, Physical Therapy Assistants, Athletic Trainers, Residents, Fellows, Medical Students.

Educational Objectives

At the conclusion of this educational activity, participants should:

        1. Differentiate among various types of sports injuries and sports-related conditions
        2. Initiate workup and know the proper indications for higher level imaging techniques in diagnosis
        3. Initiate appropriate non-operative treatment
        4. Describe the indications for referral to a specialty provider
        5. Develop hands-on skills for splinting acute extremity injuries
              CME Accreditation

              This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the accreditation requirements and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint providership of the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University and University Orthopedics, Inc. The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

              Credit Designations

              Physicians: The Warren Alpert Medical Schoolof Brown University designates this live activity for a maximum of 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

              Athletic Trainers: Alpert Medical School of Brown University is recognized by the Board of Certification, Inc. to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers (#P8573). This program has been approved for a maximum of 7.5 hours of Category A continuing education. Certified Athletic Trainers are responsible for claiming only those hours actually spent participating in the continuing education activity.

              Chiropractic Physicians: This conference is approved for Continuing Education Credits. Chiropractic Physicians will receive a Certificate of Attendance for up to 7.5 hours.

              Osteopathic Physicians: This conference is approved through the American Osteopathic Association for 7.5 credits of AOA Category 2-A CME. Osteopathic Physicians will receive a Certificate of Attendance verifying their participation.

              Physician Assistants/Nurse Practitioners: Participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance stating this program is designated for 7.5 hours AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. This credit is accepted by the AAPA and AANP.

              Physical Therapists/Physical Therapy Assistants: An application has been submitted to the Rhode Island Board of Physical Therapy. Determination of credit is pending.

              Cancellation Policy

              Cancellations/substitutions must be made in writing to the Brown CME Office at least two weeks prior to the conference, no later than November 4, 2016. A $25.00 administrative fee will be charged for all refunds (no refunds for “no shows”). There will be no additional charge for substitutions. This conference is subject to change or cancellation.

              Parking will be available in the parking garage adjacent to theMedical Building (333 Eddy St. on Google Maps). Enter through the Eddy or Elm Street entrances and take a ticket from the machine. You may park on any level of the garage and can exit using either the Eddy or Elm Street exits.
