Dr. Gruppuso received a B.A. in Arts (Music), Union College, Schenectady, New York, 1973, and an MD from the University of Rochester, Rochester, New York, 1977.  Following medical school, Dr. Gruppuso pursued clinical training in pediatrics.  It was during his residency that he became interested in biomedical research.  This led to a metabolism fellowship, clinical training in metabolism and pediatric endocrinology, and a research focus on mechanisms that regulate somatic growth.  His laboratory has had continuous NIH funding since 1983, and he has been a trainer in Brown's MCB and Pathobiology training programs since 1995.  Dr. Gruppuso, a professor of pediatrics and of molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry (secondary), was appointed Associate Dean for Medical Education at Alpert Medical School in August 2005.  He continues to direct his laboratory research program while leading the medical education program and maintaining involvement in graduate studies.
