Emily grew up in a military family and lived in Connecticut, Georgia, Washington D.C., Washington state, and Hawaii. She completed her undergraduate degree at Wellesley College in Massachusetts where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa with honors in neuroscience. At Wellesley, she researched adult neurogenesis in a crayfish model system, specifically looking at the connection between the immune and nervous systems and received the David Hubel prize for her thesis. She then attended medical school at Georgetown University where her passion for the neurosciences continued to grow. Emily enjoys exploring new cities on foot and going to museums and restaurants with her husband.
