Théo Lepage-Richer is a PhD student and Professor R. Bruce Lindsay Graduate Fellow (2017-2018) in the department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. Previously, he completed a Master’s in Cultural Studies at Goldsmiths, where he worked on the mobilization of viruses as discursive and regulatory devices in the fields of viral marketing, cyberwarfare, and epidemiology. His current work is broadly concerned with the shift from the cybernetic notions of archiving, taxonomy, and ontology associated with post-war computing to the concepts of generalization, transferability, and abstraction at the heart of contemporary machine learning.
Research interests: Media theory and critical data studies; science and technology studies; epistemology of machine learning; history of computing, mathematics, and cognitive science; connectionism and neural networks; visual knowledge
